UT Computer Science Ph.D. student Suman Jana has been awarded the 2014 PET Award for Outstanding Research in Privacy Enhancing Technologies for his work on privacy-preserving perceptual computing. This annual award is given to the best paper of the year in the area of privacy.

Suman, who works with Associate Professor Vitaly Shmatikov and Stanford's Professor Dan Boneh, received the Best Practical Paper Award from the 2014 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy ("Oakland”) earlier this year for his work on automatically finding flaws in the implementations of network security protocols such as SSL/TLS. This symposium is the top publication venue in computer security and privacy.
