In 2002, Defense Advances Research Projects Agency (DARPA) created a funding contest to build the world's fastest and most productive supercomputer. IBM submitted a proposal in partnership with the TRIPS project, which is led by Professors Doug Burger and Steve Keckler of the University of Texas Computer Sciences Department in Austin, Texas.
Last July three of the five competitors, including IBM, were asked to refine their designs and resubmit them for the final competition in 2006.
In a recent article entitled "Fired Up for the Supercomputer Derby", Business Week highlighted the TRIPS technology along with the other competitors in the contest.
