04/01/2014 - UT Austin does more than just provide a world-class education to its own students. As a public school, we’re constantly extending our resources and knowledge into the broader community that we’re a part of. UTCS Lecturer Alison Norman and a group of UTCS undergrads recently took a turn in giving back at Austin’s Steiner Ranch Elementary School. They hosted a workshop to get kids interested in tech as part of the school’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) after-school program. Read more
02/26/2014 - UTCS has been named the recipient of a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through the CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service (SFS) program.  The SFS program will support students pursuing the university’s INFOSEC (Information Security) Certificate who also have a desire to pursue careers in information assurance to protect the government’s critical information infrastructure. Participants will receive support in the form of scholarships for tuition and fees as well as a two-year living stipend.  Read more
02/18/2014 - By Lindsey Kehlmann Friday, February 7 the Mobile App Development club (MAD) hosted a free, overnight bootcamp called uMAD intended to teach students the basics when it comes to developing apps for iPhones and Androids. “In one night we wanted to bring together all the engineers that built the tools we like using, and they would teach us students what they did to develop those tools or help us with our own projects.” Sai Avala, Android director for MAD said. However, students voluntarily taking classes on a Friday night seemed dubious to some. Read more

01/17/2014 - Glancing across the room of the Student Activity Center during the HackTX hackathon, I saw a melting pot of students of varying genders and ethnicities passionately working together huddled around a hodgepodge of electronic devices. While I was already impressed with the diversity I could see on the surface, that was only part of the story, as talking to them revealed that many of these students came from different majors and even different universities across the country. 11/23/2013 - Computer science students Jim Given (CS/Mathematics), Reid McKenzie, Julian Michael (CS/Physics), Suvamsh Shivaprasad, and Zachary Tschirhart (CS/Aerospace Engineering/Mathematics) and their teammate Eric Dawson (Biology) comprised this year's UT's winning Student Cluster team. For the 2nd year in a row, UT's team won the student cluster overall competition at the international Student Cluster conference! Read more
10/14/2013 - AUSTIN, Texas – During the last weekend of September, the Electronic Game Developers Society (EGaDS), a student-run organization, and The University of Texas at Austin’s Game Development Program hosted the annual 24-hour Game Jam. More than 70 students came together on September 27th in a competition to create an entirely new game from this year’s randomly selected theme of “redundant” in only 24-hours at The Bill & Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex and Dell Computer Science Hall (GDC).
