AUSTIN, Texas – The Center for Integrated Design (CID) in the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, founded earlier this year to bring design thinking into the core of the UT undergraduate curricula, is expanding its course offering to include three new microcredit courses that will count toward the Bridging Disciplines Program in Integrated Design.

President Fenves recently announced Calvin Lin as a recipient of the 2015-16 President's Associates Teaching Excellence Award. This award, established in the fall of 1980, recognizes the consistent level of excellence that Calvin has achieved in teaching undergraduates within the Department of Computer Science.

On January 29, UT Computer Science made its first venture into the world of MOOCs (massively open online courses). We invite you to come along for the ride. UTCS faculty (and by the way spouses) Robert van de Geijn and Maggie Myers are teaching a 16 week course on linear algebra from a computer science perspective. The course is launched by edX, UT’s non-profit partner which manages MOOCs.

On several occasions now, I’ve written about the growing phenomenon of exploding interest in computer science. I’d like to update you on these trends. As a reminder, during the years after the dot com bust, enrollments in computer science fell as low as about 700 undergraduates here at UT. We started this year with 2,100 students. Early estimates next year are starting to crystallize now, and we expect to pass the 2,300 marker, which brings us fully back to dot-com levels with no sign of a slow down in sight.
