UTCS Alumnus Don Towsley

Former UTCS student Don Towsley is the recipient of the 2007 IEEE Koji Kobayashi Computers and Communications Award.

The IEEE Board of Directors chose Towsley for his fundamental contributions to the theory and practice of computers and communication networks.

The IEEE Koji Kobayashi Computers and Communications Award was established by the IEEE Board of Directors in 1986 for outstanding contributions to the integration of computers and communications. The Award is named in honor of Dr. Koji Kobayashi, who has been a leading force in advancing the integrated use of computers and communications. The award consists of a bronze medal, certificate and honorarium.

Don Towsley received a B.A. degree in Physics and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Sciences from The University of Texas in 1971 and 1975 respectively, studying under Professor J. C. Browne. From 1976 to 1985 he was a member of the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is currently a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts. He has held visiting positions at IBM Research, Microsoft Research, AT&T Labs, INRIA, and University of Paris VI. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the /IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. He has previously won the IEEE Communications Society William Bennett Prize paper Award (1998) and numerous conference and workshop best paper awards. His research interests include performance evaluation and networking.
